Core PCE Price Index (m/m)

End of month · 08:30 ET

The Fed's preferred inflation gauge — broader than CPI and weighted differently. It is the number the Fed's own 2% target is defined against.

Because CPI and PPI print earlier, the market can usually model PCE closely; surprises are rarer but hit hard when they land, since they bear directly on the target the Fed answers to.

What it measures

The price index of Personal Consumption Expenditures ex food and energy — the inflation measure the Fed's 2% target is actually written against, published with the income/spending bundle.

  • Core PCE m/m — the target variable itself
  • Personal income & spending — the demand context around the price number
  • Revisions — PCE is revised more than CPI; the trend matters more than any single print

Why the economy cares

Definitionally the most important inflation number — but the least surprising: CPI and PPI print earlier and let the market model PCE to within a few hundredths.

How it maps onto the chart

Direction logic mirrors CPI (hot → USD up, risk down), but the priced-in factor dominates: our measurement puts the post-release hour at ~1.0x an ordinary hour — the market usually already knows this number.

Price behavior around the release

Before

Minimal dedicated positioning; the release often lands on month-end flows that dwarf it.

During

Muted by big-release standards; only a genuine model-miss (rare) produces an NFP-style impulse.

After

When PCE does surprise, the move is durable — it bears directly on the target — but the base case is business as usual within the hour.
